Dave Brown (rugby league)
David (Dave) Brown (born 9 June 1974 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. He played in the National Rugby League for the Parramatta Eels (with whom he won two premierships) and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, as well as for the New Zealand Warriors in the Super League.
Brown was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and is of Māori and Irish descent.
Originally a Manly-Warringah junior, the New Zealand Warriors called him up for the first time on the bench for the opening game of the 1997 Super League season, where he came on as a substitute for Andy Farrell in the 75th minute in a match against the Brisbane Broncos.
He made his first class début for the Warriors in the 1998 pre-season against the Penrith Panthers and appeared in the game again the following week against the Newcastle Knights. In the same season he played 3 games for the Auckland Warriors, scoring 2 tries. In 1999 he played for the Newcastle Knights, New South Wales and Australia A.
In 2000 he was sent off 2 games for Eels, and was penalised a further 4 times. In 2001 he was sent off 2 more games. 2002 saw him play 8 games for the Rabbitohs, and at the end of the year he was again sent off.
In 2003 he returned to Parramatta and played 9 games for them. In the 2004 NRL season he played 12 games for the Eels, but was dropped for round 15. In 2006 he played for the New Zealand Warriors, but was released at the end of the season.
He plays for the Parramatta Eels juniors club as well as working as the Parramatta Eels Club Development coach.
Brown was suspended by the Eels for 25 matches between 1999 and 2001 over a string of on-field offences.
In 2000 he received a 18-month suspension for biting Wade Seccombe’s finger.
In 2004, Brown received a 6-week suspension for biting Danny Lee’s ear.
In 2007, he received a 30-day suspension and $10,000 fine after breaking the jaw of 22-year old Brent Kite after a game.
