katz also touches on several of the major recording techniques. i really enjoyed the chapter on mastering plug-ins, which talks about the pros and cons of using such software, and the reasons why some engineers don’t use them. there’s a lot of good information here, and is a solid reminder of the dangers of relying on software alone to perform tasks that are best done by the engineer in the first place. the chapter also talks about the process of working with the engineer who will be making the final mixes, and providing guidelines to help ensure a good final result. this last section also contains an excellent chapter on project management, which is a topic that i find to be of particular value for my own work as a producer.
the final part of this book talks about the mastering process in the context of the larger music industry, and the issues faced by the music producer and the music industry in general. perhaps the most important point is that you should not underestimate the power of the music industry. it is important to understand that the music you make is not just your own. it is a product that is made by a huge number of people, and therefore you have to make the industry interested in your work. after all, the music industry is the main force that makes it possible for you to be able to make the music that you make. and as a composer of the future, you have to make music that the industry wants to hear.
